UK Research To Be Open Access

UK Science Minister David Willetts wants to move to mandatory open access publishing of publicly funded research results. This is part of the document Innovation and Research Strategy for Growth, published on December 5th. The document also contains cash prizes for specific scientific challenges as well as a fund to help SME's innovate. This the Guardian reported.

"Our starting point is a commitment by the coalition to transparency and open access to publicly funded data" said Minister Willetts at the launch of the strategy. "We set out very clearly in the document today our commitment to open access. We want to move to open access, but in a way that ensures that peer review and publishing continues as a function".
