UK Location Council meets
The UK Location Council has published a summary report on the UK Location Council meeting held on the 18th June 2010.
The published summary note states:
“The programme update reported to the Council was at Amber. The key risks were identified as :
a. New policy statements that may impact on the Programme. b. Complexity of the delivery model with multiple parties delivering the central infrastructure. c. Maintaining funding throughout the Programme. d. An incoherent UK perspective of data delivery across data providers and stakeholders leading to organisations doing their own thing.”
“The Location Council agreed to the proposition that delivery of the central technical infrastructure should be delivered by data.gov.uk and Ordnance Survey, through a tripartite Memorandum of Agreement with Defra.”
“In response to the decision for the Council to take a more strategic role on wider location issues at the last meeting, it considered a number of current issues :
a. The position of Ordnance Survey following the consultation response. In particular discussion focussed on the Public Sector Mapping Agreement and governance of the agreement. It was noted that work is ongoing, but that the Location Council would be kept informed as things developed, and proposals on how the Council should be involved.
b. The approach being taken by The National Archives to simplify Licensing and manage Derived Data. It was explained that this was currently work in progress. There was agreement that this was an area of significant interest to the Council; a fuller discussion was requested for the next Council meeting.
c. The experience of Ordnance Survey in the provision of Open Data and the wider work being undertaken by the Cabinet Office and National Archives to enhance the level of Transparency in Government was discussed. Experience from other Council members indicated that readily available data was used more and cost less to serve. It was recognised how important the alignment of the Location Programme and data.gov.uk is to provide data to as wider audience as possible.”
