Transparency through re-use of PSI!
Cambridge: 11 December 2009
The Open Knowledge Foundation (OKF) has published a press release titled: Where Does My Money Go? Prototype Launched. The European Public Sector Information Platform meeting held in Stockholm on the 24th November 2009 (Spanish language report on APORTA) considered this application that re-uses public sector information – financial Information from the UK Treasury (The Finance Ministry) – as one of the outcomes of pragmatic steps taken by Member States to advance the re-use of public sector infromation.
In this example the application - Where Does My Money Go? was born out of the UK Cabinet Office Power of Information Taskforce and the initiative Show Us a Better Way.
The Where Does My Money Go? application demonstrates the benefits of opening up public sector information for re-use – as in this example:
- the PSI originates from the UK;
- the visualisation has been undertaken by a small SME based in the Netherlands
- the project has been and coordinated by a Civil Society Foundation registered in the UK but operating across Europe.
- the small stipend that has helped facilitate this application came from the UK Cabinet Office and their actions to stimulate the PSI re-use using small practical steps that motivate and generate interest and this in turn helps address the cultural issues so widely debated!
Similar examples are likely to follow from the Danish Competition.
The OKF Press Release states:
Currently the Where Does My Money Go prototype is based on data from HM Treasury - but the project team is working to collect, aggregate and incorporate much more fine-grained information, including on local spending. On Monday Gordon Brown announced plans to publish much more detailed information on public spending in a more systematic way as part of the Smarter Government initiative.
