State of the Map 2009
The 2009 Open Street Map (OSM) annual conference titled Open Street Map 2009 that took place in Amsterdam from the 10 to 12 July 2009 and was hailed a success. Some of the videos and presentations from the event have already been published with more to follow. A number of the presentations have been published on slideshare.
The key note presentation titled: Geodata creation:past, present and future considered five models for creating geodata:

- Creating geodata is no longer expensive!!
- Much more sustainable than other models
- Not only cheaper, scope for greater detail and more timely updates.
The Open Street Map statistics as at May 2009 were stated as:
Users: 132765 Highways: 24 million kilo-metresWays: 34 million kilo-metres
The presentation titled: Beyond good enough? Spatial Data Quality and OpenStreetMap data, makes comparisons between Open Street Map and two Ordnance Survey data products Meridian 2 and MasterMap. At the end of the presentation the question is posed: So should I use OSM (Open Street Map)? The answer given is that OSM is fit for many purposes, positional and attribute accuracy is satisfactory. Completeness in major urban areas is satisfactory – and where it is not it is easy to improve and complete the dataset. Slide 37 of the presentation details the price of the Ordnance Survey product and then considers why one would pay such a price for product when there are other viable alternatives.
