Spanish Regional Open Data Catalogues

Bilbao: 11 April 2010

The Administraciones en red has published a post, “List of open data catalogues in the world”. The post coincides with Open Data Euskadi coming online.

The post references and re-publishes (in Spanish) entries from the ePSIplatform’s Public Sector Information (PSI) Data Catalogues page.

Highlighted in the discussion is the point the only European entries of government public sector information catalogues with direct access to the data listed at this time are from the United Kingdom and Spain.

Of particular note, is the upbeat tone and enthusiasm of the comments on the post acknowledging the Spanish accomplishments in opening data and pointing to work under development and what still can be made to happen with open data in Spain, Europe and internationally.

Here is the blog post text by Alberto Ortiz de Zarate (approximate English Translation) (Spanish text online):

“On the occasion of the inauguration of open data Euskadi, the Basque government’s free data portal, I have been asked many times for other examples in the world. The pioneering experience of Vivek Kundra in the District of Columbia in 2008 still found only a handful of followers, although Barack Obama has led one of them. In Europe, we have been talking about doing it since 1998.

Then I offer the most comprehensive list I know, taken from the ePSIplatform, a project supported by the European Commission. You see all kinds of initiatives: open or still in beta, portals and some only mere catalogs. Highlights: Europe, cases appear only in Spain and the UK. We are experiencing an exciting time: the beginning of a change in the orientation of public information.

Then the list of the 26 existing initiatives today.”
