About the Author
The Aporta Project is an initiative by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce and the Ministry of the Presidency with the main objectives to raise awareness of the economic and social potential of public sector information re-use and improve transparency of the Public Administration in Spain.

The OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation) in their Peer Review report of the Spanish Government’s Avanza Plan (Information Society Polices) explains the meaning of the word Aporta: “Aporta (literally meaning to “contribute” or “share” in Spanish)”. The Aporta Project has been operational since early 2009 and since then has been working to share information about the re-use of public sector information in Spain, Spanish speaking communities and internationally.
The Aporta Team’s briefing on the State of Play: Spanish re-use of public sector information is an overview of activities and accomplishments promoting re-use.
- Highlighting the work and innovative accomplishments of Spanish regional governments
- Explaining the Spanish legislative framework for re-use
- Discussing Spanish Government policies including what was accomplished under the Spanish EU Presidency and work with international open data initiatives
- Thinking about the future for the re-use of public sector information
The Aporta website is described by the OECD as a ‘user-friendly repository and search engine’. The site, which has high visit numbers, includes a news service, blog, forum and active social network channels. Noteworthy resources published on the site include: extensive meeting documentation, multimedia training materials and a Guide to re-using Public Sector Information for the Public Sector. All resources are published in open source formats and made available for re-publishing and re-use by others.
