Safeguarding Privacy in Connected World

Brussels, 16 March 2011

Vice-President for the European Commission and EU Justice Commissioner Mrs Viviane Reding (@VivianeRedingEU) today spoke at the Privacy Platform "Review EU Protection Framework".

The prepared text has been posted on-line.

Commissioner Reding says "The question today is how the Commission will ensure that privacy rights are put into action. I am a firm believer in the necessity of enhancing individuals’ control over their own data. Peoples’ rights need to be built on four pillars:"

  1. the right to be forgotten
  2. tranparency
  3. privacy by default
  4. protection regardless of data location

Promising legislative proposals this summer she stated that the extension of general data protection rules to police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters, enforcement of data protection rules and reinforcing the independence and harmonisation of the powers of data protection agencies in Member States, are part of the reform.
