Raising the standards!
Sherborne St John, UK: 19 April 2010
The European Association of Private Meteorological Services (PRIMET) has published a news topic titled: Regulation of the Meteorological sector may be coming in the UK.
The PRIMET announcement states:
“The Royal Metetorological Society is sponsoring a new Quality Standard for the meteorological products and service suppliers in the UK. While a national scheme at present there are aspirations for it to evolve into a European wide system. The outcome of a six month trial phase for a draft Standard and Assessment process was reported to the Society's Quality Standard Advisory Council at which PRIMET is an invited observer.”
The PRIMET Briefing paper (available to Members only) states:
“Background
There has for some years been underway in the UK an action, led by the Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS), to develop a means by which end users of commercial products in meteorology can assess the quality of the product and the supplier. This began as a study on the possibility of assessing the “accuracy” of (weather) forecasts but has now developed into a proposal for the development of a Quality Standard for the industry along the lines of the ISO 9000 series. This is the beginnings of a regulatory framework for the industry, initially in the UK but, given the characteristics of the Single Market, potentially for the whole of Europe.
A draft Quality Standard was developed in 2009 under the overview of an Advisory Council made up of representatives of all those suppliers and customers who volunteered to take part. PRIMET is an observer at this Council. The application and consequences of the draft standard have been the subject of a Trial Phase in which the Standard and its application have been tested by three volunteer stakeholders, MeteoGroup, The Met Office and Metra Information (Europe) Ltd. This meeting of the Steering Group was the review of the outcome of this Trial Phase.”
