PSI Policy in Greece via the European PSI Platform

Athens: 16th & 17th December 2010

The National Hellenic Research Foundation organised and hosted a Conference titled: OPEN ACCESS: Research, Education, Public Data. The Conference was held in Athens at The National Documentation Centre (EKT) on the 16th & 17th December 2010. The session videos and other materials from the Conference have been published.

The Conference programme included a keynote address titled The Reasons Why: Open Access, Data, and Education and sessions on the following topics:

  1. Scholarly Communications Ecosystems I – The Greek Landscape
  2. Scholarly Communications Ecosystems II – The European Landscape and Collaborative Efforts
  3. Open Access and e-Research in the Humanities
  4. Open Educational Resources
  5. Open Infrastructures
  6. Open Public Data

The final session of the Conference - Session 6 Open Public Data considered 4 presentations on public sector information re-use policy in the context of Europe, Greek implementation, open data infrastructures such as INSPIRE and eGovernment.

  1. Delivering Public Sector Information Policy from Local to Global
  2. EPSIplatform’s expertise Navigation: The Greek participation
  3. A Necessity, not a Luxury: Open Data as National Information Infrastructure
  4. e-Government and Public Open Data

The four presentations were complementary in that various aspects of public sector information re-use were presented.

The second presentation: EPSIplatform’s expertise Navigation: The Greek participation was presented by Ms. Kalliopi Angeletopoulou an Advisor at the Office of the Secretary General for Public Administration and e-Government within the Ministry of Interior, Decentralization and e-Government. The presentation outlined the PSI developments within Greece and how Greece had participated in the European ePSIplus Thematic Network. The presentation was probably a first in that the content of the European Public Sector Information Platform was used to demonstrate the Greek PSI policy developments and implementation as well as the involvement of the Ministry of Interior, Decentralization and e-Government representatives in various meetings across Europe over the period 2005 to 2010. By so doing the presentation helped the Greek audience understand and locate information about Greece in the European PSI Platform as well as demonstrate the depth of information contained within the platform. The presentation referred to amongst other topics:

  • The DIAVGEIA project and the adoption of Creative Commons licensing
  • the European PSI Platform Topic Report 16: Topic Report No 16: INSPIREd by Openness: The case of the implementation of Directive 2007/2/EC in Greece as a general model for open data regulation within the context of Public Sector Information written by Prodromos Tsiavos, who presented the third presentation titled: A Necessity, not a Luxury: Open Data as National Information Infrastructure.
