Norwegian Data on Sports Facilities Opened Up

The Norwegian Sports Index contains information about the name, type and location for all kinds of sports facilities that at some point obtained public funding. The register was created in 1992 and is continuously updated by municipalities, county councils and the ministry itself. A raw data file (zip, containing UTF-16 CSV) that contains the Sports Index as of June first of 2010 has been made available for free download and re-use.In April the Minister for Innovation asked readers of Computerworld and data.norge.no what data they would like to have available in an article called 'Dream data' (Drommedata). Hakon Dreyer was one of those responding and asked for the Sports Index. That has now become reality. Sverre Andreas at the announcement on data.norge.no asks "Who will be the first to create an application that shows the nearest bowling alley? Or to calculate the density of artificial turf? What else can this data be used for?" Because once data is out there, it's up to us as citizens to make use of the opportunities that bring.
