Meteorological PSI Potential for Generating Tax Revenue
The GeoConnexion International web portal features an online “Burning Issue” column and each month a leading industry figure is asked to write about a ‘hot’ topic.
Dr. Richard Pettifer, General Secretary, PRIMET, is hosting this Month’s Burning Issue column and the ‘hot topic’ is his research showing the potential for Meteorological PSI to generate 300 million euro in European tax revenue annually. The research undertaken by Dr. Pettifer is published in the paper entitled: PSI in European Meteorology – An Unfulfilled Potential, and was presented to the 7th Eastern European eeGov Days : eGovernment & eBusiness Ecosystem & eJustice April (22) - 23 - 24, 2009 Prague, Czech Republic.

Some excerpts from the column assert:
“At this time of shrinking national economies and falling Treasury revenues it is hard to imagine why European nations should simply forego a minimum of almost 300 million Euro of taxation annually. But they do, from just one small sector of the geodata economy.”
“…it is argued that the European model for the distribution and re-use of meteorological data is suppressing the development of the commercial market with a consequent net loss of around 300 million Euro in potential annual tax take.”
