On the 31 August 2006 European Commissions recommendation on the digitisation and online accessibility of cultural material and digital preservation (2006/585/EC) was published in the Official Journal of the European Union. (L 236/28). Paragraph 24 of the recommendation required European Union Member States to inform the Commission by March 2008 (and there after every two years) of the action taken in response to the Commissions recommendation.

On the 15 April 2008 the European Commission published the reports received from the EU27 Member States, 3 EEA & EFTA Member States and Israel on the implementation of the Commission Recommendation on Digitisation and online accessibility of Cultural Material and Digital Preservation.
