An Industry worth Billions of Euros

Paris: 2 October 2009

OSOR.eu (Open Source Observatory and Repository) has published a news release about the Deputy Mayor of Paris, Jean-Louis Missika’s opening address at the Open World Forum held in Paris 1-2 October 2009.

The news release states:

“Governments should make their public data available on-line to all, Jean-Louis Missika, deputy mayor of Paris said on Thursday. Such data could be used to create real time services and geo-location services.

"We all know that in a few years this will be an industry worth billions of euro", Missika said in his opening speech at the Open World Forum conference taking place in Paris Thursday and Friday. He expects that the sharing of government data will help companies and citizens to realise for instance green economic growth and increase the quality of transportation. It will generally lead to a better quality of life.

He said the Paris regional administration in 2002 made much of its geographic data publicly available. "Of course there is data that is sensitive, such as the locations of gas pipelines, but most other types of government data can be used by companies and citizens."

The deputy mayor, city council member responsible for innovation, research and universities, hopes that the Paris region will take a main role in developing services on this type of data. "That is why we are working on a major government project to make such data available."

Missika at the Open World Forum also argued in favour of public administrations increasing their use of open source software. He said this type of software means people work collectively and share their intelligence.

"Open source increases productivity, raises efficiency and creates interoperability, he said. "Most companies already know that this interoperability is very important for making their medium and long term decisions."
