Nairobi, Kenya / London, UK, 14 August 2011
(by Ton Zijlstra)
The 'Internet as a catalyst for change: access, development, freedoms & innovation' is the theme of this year’s Internet Governance Forum 2011 Meeting (IGF).
The IGF Secretariat supports the United Nations Secretary-General in carrying out the mandate from the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). The goal is to promote global multi-stakeholder policy dialogue to exchange ideas and views on Internet governance and innovation.
This 6th annual IGF 2011 meeting is taking place in Nairobi, Kenya from the 27th to 30th September 2011. It includes a range of Workshops designed to support the overarching themes of the IGF meeting.
Participate in Workshop 123 – Global Open Data Workshop Discussions
- 30 September 2011 – 09:30 to 10:30 am (Room 14)
Under the IGF 2011 Meeting theme of ‘Security, Openness and Privacy’, Workshop 123 has been approved. Workshop 123: Public Sector Information online: towards a Global policy framework has a panel format with current representation from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Spain and the United Kingdom. Workshop discussions, in an open interactive debate format, will focus on the approaches that could lead to the formation of a global public sector information policy framework for consideration and adoption by the United Nations Member States.
The Workshop starts by asking and will follow up with questions probing the responses:
- “Is there a need for a global policy on public sector information - open government data similar to that adopted by the OECD and the European Union that have been adopted by approximately 50+ United Nations Member States?”
Workshop 123 Continuing the International Open Data Discussion
This year’s Workshop 123 builds upon the conclusions reached at the previous IGF5 2010 Workshop 120: ‘Public Sector Information Online: democratic, social and economic potentials’. The IGF5 workshop built upon the debate first started at the IGF3 Best Practice Forum 69: Enhanced Internet-Enabled Access and Use of Public Sector Information (organised by the OECD). The workshop incorporates the IGF6 Workshop 110 proposal titled: Open Data: Challenges and Solutions and will take into account Open Government Data.
