Enel Adapts License To True Open Data

Late last month we reported that Italian power company Enel had launched an open data portal, releasing data about the company, energy production and consumption. At the time the portal came with a license that restricted re-use to non-commercial purposes, and did not allow derivative works (effectively making applications using the data impossible).

In a next step Enel has now changed the license to a Creative Commons By Attribution license, merely requiring re-users to mention Enel as the source of data.

Enel will also start working with Apps4Italy.

A press release concerning this next step is expected later today. Making corporate data available for re-use is a slowly growing response to more government held data being made available for re-use. Out of the combination of both new applications and insights can become possible.
