DataViz

London: October 2009

Research commissioned by the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG, UK) has resulted in the launching of a portal called DataViz - all about visualisation of public sector data.

Research Report

The report on the research behind the DataViz portal is available online.

Title: DataViz: improving data visualisation for the public sector, ISBN 9781409817666, 24 August 2009, 30 pages

The main research objectives were to:

  • assess and appraise the current range of visualisation solutions - what visualisations are being used by public sector and elsewhere?
  • provide advice on the decision making process for selecting visualisations at different levels of the government delivery chain - is there a useful typology of visualisation solutions, and what are the most appropriate visualisation options for particular purposes?

The DataViz portal describes their work:

“Good data visualisation can help users explore and understand the patterns and trends in data, and also communicate that understanding to others to help them make robust decisions based on the data being presented. This site supports public sector researchers improve the way that they visualise data, by providing good practice examples and case studies, practical and step-by-step guides on how to visualise data, and links to more detailed resources. “

Web pages on the DataViz portal include:

  • Examples (Gallery and Visual Types)
  • Case Studies and Guides
