Danish Ministry to set the example
The Danish Minister for Science, Technology and Development Charlotte Sahl-Madsen has responded to a blog posting titled: Hvad skal netmedierne med støtte?
The Minister comments:
“Dear Ernst Poulsen You describe some interesting perspectives on database and maps journalism, which I also quite busy. We have already Initiative Public Data In Play (Odis) but we are considering are constantly new opportunities. In Britain it has been already an official approach for access to public data, and it was actually just media industries - more specifically, the Guardian newspaper - which was the British politicians to open up data. Access to data material can be - as you write - enhance transparency, information, democracy and participation, as it can help to create digital innovation and business growth - both in the media industry and other industries. Therefore, I as a minister right preoccupied with how we make it easier to access using public data. In this context we would like to work with both journalism courses, universities, other educational institutions and various media. UK, USA and other countries have already developed strategies for access to government data. In Denmark, we could also usefully develop a plan for how we can exploit public data as a raw material for strengthening:
- Innovation and business growth
- Information, transparency, democracy and participation
- Better government information and services
It should of course just thought through how we do it best. But conversely, it's also important to move things. I have therefore decided that we in my area take our own medicine by going ahead and during the year to open up and expose all of our records which are not covered by confidentiality or privacy constraints. We are also starting to develop guidance and recommendations to other government departments so that they - like Dan - can make the data available. I take this opportunity to invite everyone who has an interest in this area to contribute ideas and participate in debates on public data at Digitaliser.dk " Sincerely, Science Ministers Charlotte Sahl-Madsen”
