Cultural Heritage just a click away!

Brussels: 16th & 17th July 2007

MEP’s backed the setting up of a digital library as a single, direct and multilingual access point to the European cultural heritage at the European Parliament Committee on Culture and Education held on 16th July 2007 in Brussels.

The European Parliament press release states that:

“The committee stresses the importance of having a multilingual interface that gives direct access to the content in all EU languages. It should also be possible to conduct the searches in all languages.

The MEPs say that existing initiatives in Europe that connect libraries and give access to national European library collections should contribute to the creation of the European digital library. As for funding, the committee says new methods of financing must be developed - including partnerships with the private sector.”

The papers (The proposal PE384.237, Amendments PE391.994) considered by the Committee were brought forward by French MEP Marie-Hélène Decamps and are available in most European languages.
