Commercial use of public information
London: 23 April 2009
The UK Office of Fair Trading (OFT) welcomes the UK Government announcement on the new strategy for the Ordnance Survey.
The OFT announcement states:
“The government’s new commercial strategy for Ordnance Survey reflects some of the recommendations made by the OFT in its Commercial Use of Public Information market study published in 2006.
In particular, the OFT looks forward to the commitments which Ordnance Survey has given to stimulate innovation, make data and services more widely available and increase competition for the benefit of consumers in this geographical information market.
It is vital that Ordnance Survey now delivers on these commitments. Its plans to change its licensing and pricing terms, if delivered in the right way, should help to free up the market.
However, if progress is not achieved quickly enough, the Government and Ordnance Survey should be ready to consider other solutions, including different forms of separation – in line with the principles of good practice established by the Government’s Trading Funds Assessment.
The Office of Public Sector Information, in consultation with the OFT, will monitor the progress of Ordnance Survey’s strategy over the next twelve months to ensure the market works well for consumers.
The government announced the commercial strategy as part of the Budget 2009.”
