APORTA III – a great Success!

Madrid – 15 June 2009

Project Aporta have published the materials from the APORTA III meeting that was held on the 9 June 2009 in Madrid. The meeting was well run with a broad range of speakers and presentations from both Spain and other parts of Europe that raised the awareness on the benefits that accrue from re-using public sector information. The meeting was streamed to the Internet that set others twittering especially on the presentation from John Sheridan from the UK Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI). All that attended considered the meeting to be a complete success.

The materials published include video’s, photographs, presentations along with other materials. The meeting titled La reutilización de la información del sector público en Europa was attended by over 210 people that witnessed the launch of the Guide to re-using public sector information.

David Cierco the General Director for Information Society Development, Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade, Spain opened the meeting which then went onto consider 17 presentations under the following headings:

  • Current situation in Europe on Re-use of Public Sector Information
  • Best practices on Re-use in Europe
  • Licenses and fees
  • Experiences on Re-use by different actors

The case study presented on locating the cheapest litre of petrol within a given geographic area that was produced by a micro enterprise of two people highlights one of the fundamental benefits that if public sector information is enabled for easy re-use many micro and small to medium size enterprises will offer new innovative products and services that include public sector information.

The meeting concluded that there was still much to do and Spain outwardly indicated that all will be done within Spain to maximise the benefit from re-using public sector information. The meeting delegates looked forward to the next APORTA event and actions.

It was clear from the meeting that at long last that the inertia within Europe was being overcome with respect to raising awareness on the benefits to be gained from re-using public sector information and all involved in Spain are to be congratulated on showing leadership and as importantly investing in raising awareness, for openness and transparency.
