Madrid: 3 September 2010

Spain’s PSI Information Service, Proyecto Aporta, has published a blog commentary about the upcoming Workshop 120: Public sector information online: democratic, social and economic potentials.

The Workshop is taking place within the auspices of the Internet Governance Forum 2010: Developing the Future Together’ and is jointly organised by Proyecto Aporta and the European Public Sector Information Platform.

Proyecto Aporta’s blog commentary describes the workshop and gives a brief history of the development of the IGF Forum and is as follows (Spanish text online).

“At the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), held in Tunisia in November 2005, it was decided to create the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) as a platform (made up of government, private sector and civil society). The IGF is a meeting discussion forum and liaison between existing organisations, identification of emerging issues and exchange of best practices in all areas related to Internet governance.

To date four IGF meetings have taken place. The next IGF takes place in Vilnius (Lithuania) from the 14th to 17th September 2010 and will address many issues related to Internet governance from security, privacy, capacity and names domain (TLD), to IPv6 and DNSSEC including social networks, youth and sustainable development.

Also, as already reported in an earlier published article in this very blog, the IGF 2010 has adopted the workshop event entitled: "Public Sector Information Online: its democratic potential, social and economic potential", which will place on the 17th September starting at 11:30 am.

The workshop headed by the Proyecto Aporta and the ePSIplatform includes the involvement of representatives of the following organisations and institutions:

The objective of this workshop is to maintain an open dialogue between speakers and audience participants, either in person or remotely, on the potential re-use of public sector information: democratic, social and economic including obstacles, challenges and best practices achieved so far.

Current issues will be under discussion in the field of public data release, including pricing, licensing, conditions for re-use, privacy, national interest, and intellectual property rights, among others.

Similarly, analyzing the latest initiatives in terms of creating public information catalogues, Proyecto Aporta will contribute to the debate information on Aporta’s recent experience launching the catalog on public sector information from the General State Administration.

The Workshop promises to bring a wealth of views and approaches with engaging and stimulating discussions involving representatives from the public sector, private sector and civil society.”
