Mapping

Chris Herwig, a data analyst at MapBox, has started and published an interesting mapping project. He started mapping the planet Mars. To be able to do this open data comes into play from NASA / JPL, USGS and various other (academic) sources.

The result is a visually attractive way to explore the red planet, see where the various landings have taken place, and where the mars rover Curiousity is going.

All map sources have also been made available again...

With Hurricane Irene passing over the eastern part of the USA this weekend, it is important for people to be able to track information quickly as well as having that information presented in a useful and understandable way.

Publicly available data, from both government and private sources, can be used for this. Most of those sources are of course distributed, but bringing them together is easy when it's available and reusable as open data, and when it can be combined using mapping tools such as for instance...
