The Centre of Advanced Journalism, University of Melbourne has launched what is believed to be the first academic course in data driven journalism in Australia. Ten students doing the Master of Journalism program enrolled in the course given by an experienced data journalist. It is planned to be scaled up in the next academic year.

Fjum and the European Journalism Centre are organising a two-day Data Journalism Conference, Vienna, 14 -15 June 2012.

The 1st Day of the conference, June 14th, offers a series of talks, aimed at journalists and decision makers in newsrooms, heads of sections or editors-in-chief, who want to get a sense of what data journalism can do for their newsroom, what the operation involves and if it makes sense for their newsroom to start a data journalism operation.

The European Journalism Centre and fjum (the forum for journalism and media in Vienna) are inviting journalists and media professionals to a two-day data journalism event in Vienna, Austria on 14 and 15 June.

A one day conference is followed by a second day of workshops. The program is focussed on how to get started with data driven journalism, and how to develop the skills needed.

The Data Journalism Handbook has been published this weekend. The handbook is the result of a collaborative effort by data journalists around the world, edited by Jonathan Gray, Lucy Chambers (OKFN) and Liliane Bonegrou (ECJ).

The University of Tilburg in the Netherlands is starting a master track on data journalism this year.

Two Dutch regional newspapers( Stentor and TC Tubantia) have launched 'RegioHack', a new initiative to experiment with data driven journalism around local issues with local open government data. Both news papers circulate in the eastern part of the Netherlands.
