During the 17th PSI Group Meeting at the European Commission in Luxembourg the German representative brought the news that a national portal will be launched this month in beta.

This is the result of study (by Fraunhofer FOKUS) that found while lots of government information is being published, it is not available as data for re-use, and which recommended a portal to be created.

The German city Rostock is preparing the launch of a city data portal for 22 February. An alpha version is already available online containing some 50 datasets covering a variety of fields and themes. All data is provided under an open license, requiring only attribution of the source.

During the 17th PSI Group Meeting at the European Commission in Luxembourg the German representative announced that three additional German States are preparing the launch of an open data portal. This in addition to existing state level open data portals such as Bremen, Berlin, Bayern, and Baden Württemberg. It was not shared which states have these plans.

Vattenfall the energy utility company that runs the grid in Berlin, in collaboration with Fraunhofer FOKUS, have opened up data concerning the energy grid to the public. This is a first in Germany, and part of the company's transparency initiative. In Italy, ENEL, the country's largest energy producer earlier made similar steps, although the data made available in Berlin is much more detailed.

The German State Nordrhein-Westfalen (Northrhine-Westphalia) has for the first time released data on the financial situation of local governments in the state. The German Pirate Party has been negotiating the release of this data for a year, which is now available from the Pirate Party website.
